Hi there,

I am Helen T. Whitley, LCSW in private practice for 15 years and Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher since 2006. Laughter Yoga is a great social work oriented activity! It is not "yoga" as you know it. It as a recent, worldwide body/mind fitness craze that is just getting going over here in the US. It is a simple, physically oriented techique which incorporates laughter exercises and yogic breathing. It is done in a group setting. The health and mental health benefits are amazing and numerous! It is an instant mood lifter for you or the clients you serve. Seniors absolutely love it, and anyone can do it. My husband and I got trained together in 2006, then went and trained at the highest level with the creator himself, Dr. Madan Kataria. We have done dozens of presentations in the past year, and we can train you do to the same. We presented at the GA NASW conference last fall, and recently at the VA Medical Center in GA, to name a few. Please check out our website at www.addlaughter.com for more info!  Helen T Whitley, LCSW

Hi there, I hope you are there over 7 weeks later! Believe it or not, I had a knee replacement three days before I wrote that post. Long story, and I apologize for not ever coming back to the forum till now. So I hope you will come back to see it! Basically, I went to a yoga retreat in the mountains, learned about Laughter Yoga, and learned from a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, meaning, a person who has been trained by Dr. Kataria (the creator) in a 5-day training. So, she was then qualified to train people to be Leaders, in a 2-day training/certification program. So, in Nov 2006, we went through her training, then started a free, weekly laughter club we still have, in Feb 2007. It took off from there, with newspapers and magazines interviewing us within the first few months, to putting a website up, etc. We got every speaking engagement/laughter yoga session, or presentation by asking, really! But then, companies/groups started asking us at some point. They being everyone from NASW (we sent in a proposal) to the VA Medical Center in Augusta (they asked us-) because we got such great evaluations at the NASW (GA) Conference last year. The VA was able to pay us, and we spoke all day for them- with lots of laughter included!

I am not exactly sure if I am answering your question specifically enough, but I DO appreciate your question very much :). We have a leader training coming up Sep 27-28th and another on Nov 15-16th, with 11 CEUS in addition to certification. So, please email me at helentw@comcast.net or go to www.addlaughter.com for more detailed info on trainings. I truly believe over time, that I can spend most of my time laughing! What's better than that?

Hi.  I wanted to let everyone know that Helen Whitley has written an article on Laughter Yoga that has been published in the Fall issue of THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER.  You can read her article at:

or download the PDF version at:

It is a fascinating article!
