Hello everyone!

I have a huge question for those of you who have/want children of your own.

I really want to become a Social Worker, and have for a long time. Its something that I feel I was meant to do, and I would really love to work in the Youth Corrections/ Youth Advocacy department. The problem is I also have a strong desire to someday have a family of my own, and I am so scared that the two would clash and end up in a huge mess.

I am so scared that I am going to spend so much time working with other peoples kids, and helping them reach their full potential, that my own kids will end up rebelling because of it.

If I become a Social Worker, I want to be dedicated to my job, but I also want to be a dedicated parent and wife someday too and I'm scared that I just wont be capable of doing both.

So my question for those of you who do have children is has this ever been an issue for you? and if so, how did you deal with it?

Thanks!

You can do both! I have been a social worker for almost 28 years right after I graduated from college. I went back and got my MSW and continued working full time in public social work and met my husband who is a probation officer. We have 2 young teen agers and we have a great life. Seeing all of the problems that I have makes me appreciate my family all the more.I definately think being an MSW has made me a better mother and has made me work harder at making a strong family.

I def think you do it. You seem very clear on what your expectations are. Now i will be clear, just make sure that the place you work understands your life and your expectations. I only say that because i just left a MSW position where the job was very stressful. Now, I dont have any children, but my two close co-workers were struggling everyday with figuring out who was going to pick up the children from school or day care because there was a crisis and they couldnt leave work. This became very stressful for them and they are both looking to leave the job but need to look for something else before that. This caused alot of stress for these two co-workers and it affected them in more ways than one. So i think that is something very important to consider.

Just my thoughts...wish u all the best!
